The Mans Cave App

The Mans Cave

The Mans Cave was a concept originated long before my time. The men in my family have always had their place of solitude where men could be men and there was no questioning. I now live the city life which means the man cave has been greatly reduced in size. That brought me to create an internet based man cave where all men can join in. Whether geek, gamer, jock, fitness, brewer, BBQ-er, or just looking for a place to read about manly news, you will find a home in the Man Cave

Mega Beer Review: 8 New Beers Reviewed!

To celebrate Father's Day, my father-in-law and I went to a craft beer tasting that featured around 30 different beers.  I have review some of them already, like Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale, but there were plenty I had never had before.  Here's eight reviews for beers that range from "Don't Touch with a Ten Foot Pole" to phenomenal choices.

Brouwerij Riva S.A. Lucifer- 8.5% ABV- This Belgian Strong ale surprised me.  I was expecting something darker, with more dried fruits flavors in there, but the actual beer was more focused on clove like flavors.  There was some good hop background that helped this one out.  Rating 8/10

Victory Brewing Co Storm King Stout- 9.10% ABV- This beer is incredible.  Extremely dark and roasty, with strong chocolate aroma that gives way to rich coffee and roasty flavors.  You won't notice any hops, but they give just enough balance.  Rating- 9/10

Florida Beer Co Hurricane Reef Pale Ale- 5.10% ABV- This beer was a little plain, but there is some decent hop flavor and aroma that gives some citrus effect to this beer.  Not my favorite beer ever, but could be far worse than it is.  Rating 6.5/10

Shipyard XXXX IPA- 9.25% ABV- First of all, if you are expecting a complete hop bomb because of all the X's don't be fooled.  The X's are simply a way that breweries used to denote the alcohol level and flavor of the beer.  However, this beer is definitely one of the best offerings that I have had from Shipyard.  Far better than their flagship brew, Export, this one provides great citrus and pine aroma that carries into the flavor, but is balanced by some smooth caramel flavor.  Rating- 8/10

Holy Mackeral Panic Attack- 10% ABV- After drinking the other offering from this brewery, I was skeptical tasting this one.  However, I was completely disappointed.  Some decent Belgian spice comes through with a smooth citrus background, but altogether it just seems to lack some flavor.  Rating- 7/10

Shipyard Double Old Thumper- 11.2% ABV- This is definitely one of those beers that you want to save for dark stormy nights when the temperature drops a little, but the dark malty character of this brew is impressively smooth for an ABV this high.  Dark brown sugar flavors give off some sweetness to complement this beer.  Rating- 8/10

St. Peter's Golden Ale- 4.7% ABV- Let me start off by saying that I have heard great things about this beer, so either something has gone wrong at the brewery, or I had a bad bottle.  The beer looked great, a nice dark golden color, but it smelled like Corona, and the skunkiness carried through into the flavor.  I'll have to get another bottle to try again, but for now... Rating- 4/10

Filming and Editing is almost done with our Grain to Glass Homebrewing Film! We're getting excited about releasing this great tool for anyone to have.  Keep checking back for more information!

Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale Review

This beer caught my eye the other day, mostly because it was something that I'd never seen before, and I'm always looking for new things to try.  Like most of Lagunitas beer, the description of this one was pretty vague.  Their website says that it is an Imperial Mild, so I expected some pretty hoppy flavor with a more alcoholic kick to it.  Surprisingly, it hid the 10% ABV pretty well.

The beer poured a dark copper red, but was really clear when I held it up to the light.  There was pretty much no head when I poured it, but some little whispers of foam stuck around while I drank it.  It smelled differently than I thought it was going to.  While it had the piney, cirtusy hop aroma that I was expecting, there was also some dried fruit type smells, and definitely some serious caramel aroma.

The taste started out darker than I expected, meaning that I was getting more of that caramel flavor and raisin and brown sugar flavor as well.  Then, about halfway through swallowing it, the bright hoppy flavors I was looking forward to with the beer's 72 IBUs really came out and took over.  Slightly reminiscent of Dogfish Head's 90 minute IPA, with a little more caramel and a little less in the hop department.  For being a 10% beer, this one was very drinkable, and I did not notice that high of an alcohol flavor.

Rating- 8/10 (Wanted a little more of that hop flavor in the front than there was.)

New Movies This Weekend

This weekend we have two new movies, and both show a little promise in certain areas.  On one hand we have another comic-book born hero jumping into theaters as Green lantern.  On the other hand we have a family comedy involving penguins with Mr. Popper's Penguins.  You family men might find yourselves joining the penguins this weekend with that family comedy, but we know you would rather see Green Lantern save the Earth!  However, you Green Lantern goers may come up short on the entertainment side with this movie...

The Green Lantern:
In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds). Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before.

Thanks to modern technology the action in this movie will be spot on with what you expect.  However, reliving all these comic-book hero's on the big screen could start getting old.  Lets face it when everyone saw their childhood hero's hit theaters they debated over waiting in line a day in advance to get tickets!  But years after the start of this craze some of us are getting a bit sick of these ones.  Green Lantern may be great, but the hype around this movie has kind of failed it.  Expect it to hit #1 this weekend, but it will be taken down by a bigger movie later in the summer!

Mr. Popper's Penguins:
In this family comedy, Jim Carrey is Mr. Popper, a driven businessman who is clueless when it comes to the important things in life - until he inherits six penguins. Popper's penguins turn his swank New York apartment into a snowy winter wonderland - and the rest of his life upside-down. Filmed on a refrigerated sound-stage with real Emperor Penguins, Mr. Popper's Penguins is a contemporary adaptation of the classic book.

Another family comedy is hitting the big screen just in time for your kids to be on summer break!  This means you will most likely be dragged to this movie if your kids fall under the age of 12.  Don't be too discouraged because there is a bit of laughter for adults in there too.  You wont be disappointed, but you'll hope the DVD doesn't end up in your house down the road.  Your family will love this movie, and you can score some extra points by taking them to see real penguins later in the weekend!

of course with all this said and done... we have to note that any New England dwellers should probably skip the movies and hit that big Boston Bruin parade on Saturday!

The Best Online Services that are Worth Paying For

Most online services are free, or at least have free memberships.  However, there are usually some premium services that those free members never get to see!  Only the paying members get that exclusive content or limitless interactions with those sites.  There are tons of these services out there and we are going to tell you the top ones you should be paying for!

Its important to note that these services are in no particular order.  Consider this as just services put together.  This is because these services can vary so much that it would be too difficult to nail who does what better and why.  So, once again, here's our list and its in no particular order!

Netflix:
This should be no surprise at all!  This video streaming service dominates the internet with pure awesomeness, and its affordable!  They offer an ever increasing list of streaming movies, and if you can't stream it then just "que" it up to be delivered to your front door!  Netflix also has a giant range of apps and devices that allow you to stream these movies and TV shows straight to your phone, PC, DVD player, gaming console, or TV.  If you don't own a Netflix account then you NEED to get one!

Hulu Plus "Hulu+":
While on the topic of movie and TV streaming we have to mention Hulu+!  For just $8/per month you get to all the current episodes of your favorite shows the day after they air, and also all the previous seasons!  This can all be in HD, and only this paid services unlocks other devices like Xbox 360 live, PlayStation 3, and Mobile apps for Hulu access!  This is a great way to cut the cord from the cable companies and lower some bills!

Pandora One:
Now that you have some great videos to watch lets pump up your music inventory with Pandora's paid service!  Free users are limited to only 40 hours per month of listening greatness.  This includes running ads and interruptions.  However, pay the $36/per year and you get UNLIMITED access with no ads and less interruptions!  If your a music buff then this is the service you've been looking for!

Xbox Live:
Yes PlayStation people get online for free, but they also don't have as much to offer like Xbox Live.  With a simple Live membership (Gold Account) you can start playing games with friends, connect to Facebook, stream Hulu+, Netflix, live sports from ESPN, and much more!  Xbox recently announced that it's looking to expand on their TV like services as well!  This one is an absolute must for any Xbox 360 owner!
Flickr Pro Account:
Taking a ton of photos and want them all online in-case something happens to your computer?  Then this is your kind of service!  This services only costs $24.95 and gets you unlimited upload space for all your photos. The unpaid version limits you to 300MB.
Amazon Prime Membership:
First off, this service is free for 1 year if you are a new mother (or father) or if you are a student that has a ".edu" student e-mail address.  Regardless, if you order a decent amount of stuff online then you know how much shipping and handling can hurt your cash-flow!  This paid services gives you FREE 2-day shipping on your Amazon orders, and Amazon has EVERYTHING!  It also upgrades your video streaming services with them to include exclusive free content.  They give you Netflix like access to certain movies and TV shows.  Online shoppers... this is a must!
Drop Box:
This service gives free members 2GB of storage space online and has some awesome syncing options to make handling that data really simple!  However, if you find yourself needing more than the small 2GB free version you can upgrade to larger versions!  This is a great storage and syncing service across PC's and mobile devices!  If you need some storage their your people!

Google Storage:
This is a lesser known storage system, but still very note-worthy!  Upgrading with this feature gives you more storage space for a range of services like: GMail, GoogleDocs, or Picasa.  for a measly $5/per year you get 20GB of storage.  Google even has plans that go upward to 16TB of storage!

More Call of Duty: Black Ops Clips

Once again we're bringing you guys new Black Ops clips from me, REM4606!  I'm not as good as eVo DEADPOOL, but I've learned from him and can certainly deliver some good entertaining clips!  Before you get to the clips I just want to say that we are only using the built in function from Black Ops to make and export these clips.  This explains the lower quality images and 30 second limitation we have to work with... We will be getting a HD ripper for longer and better quality clips in the near future.  Until then, enjoy these highlights thanks to our YouTube channel: TheMansCave2.

As mentioned above I apologize for the fast-forwarding and bad quality, we are forced to work with strict limitations for uploading these clips...

Here's our first clip of the day! Its a capture the flag PUB game...
Just a little running and gunning during a PUB capture the flag match. Starts with a nice 2 piece to re-claim our flag, then I prevent a few guys from trying to sneak up on our flag from my side.  After another nice long distance 2 piece I decide its time to take the fight to them and begin pushing forward.  There's a close call at the end, but a quick trigger-finger keeps me alive!

Here's a two part clip during a PUB headquarters match (16 Kill-Streak)...
After capturing the headquarters (before clip starts) I circled around the building to allow the enemies some time to get near the headquarters.  I then enter in behind them and get 2 easy kills because of their confined space.  I proceed to spring out in front of a nade thrower and take him and his two buddies out (I didn't plan on jumping out in front of him, it was just luck)... I proceed to push their spawn to the corner while a new headquarters appears behind me, so I hold the line on two fronts to allow us to get better positioning. Finally I just run into their forced spawn and flush them out some stragglers.... see part 2 for continuation (12 Kill-streak so far, not counting airstrikes).

Part two of the headquarters match (The last few seconds are from earlier in the match)...
Continuing from the 12 Kill-streak from Part 1..... I took their spawn area and push them to the portion of the map furthest away from our newly captured headquarters.  Then I circle back expecting them to spawn there again and get a nice 2 piece before dying with a 16 Kill-streak .... The defense clip is just a funny fail on the enemy team's end for not clearing me out before trying to destroy our headquarters (same match but earlier in).
